Flame Festival Prep

Flame Festival is a very cool event where fire performers, teachers, students, and enthusiasts gather for workshops, camping for 4 days in the woods. This year it is in Washington, GA.

Currently, I primarily do amateur performances at a mostly fun low-skill level. Admittedly, I’ve been focusing on other things more. However, I aspire to give amateur and professional fire and aerial performance as a side gig. So this event is always exciting for me because truly amazing performers and teachers always attend and are incredibly gracious with their energy and instruction.

In the weeks leading up, I’ve been focusing on my fundamental staff skills. I have a pretty good understanding of simple pinch points, wraps, and rolls. But I want to go into the festival having learned and be polishing fishtails, the steve, the conveyer belt, the halo, and chi rolls. I plan to attend all the contact staff. I’ve been really enjoying the tutorials by Philocircle and Fire Technicians. I took classes with Admiral last year. My tutorials are in this playlist:

I still enjoy fans, but I won’t be focusing on progressing them at this time through classes. I will practice S shapes and flowers. My tutorials are in this playlist:

I plan to attend the two palm torch tutting classes. I’ve recently gotten an interest in tutting, but haven’t really put a lot of practice in yet.

I am also hoping to attend the 102 Pole dancing class. I hope that works out with the instructor because I’ve had plenty of 101 classes over the years, and I want to attend a different class during 101.

There were no beginner silks classes offered. I hope to participate in the flow jam aspect assuming that happens during the fire circle. However, my aerial conditioning is still very much low level. I am getting a few more practices in a month than I have been, but my inversions and hipkeys are still not back. Although my weight wouldn’t hold all aerialists back from these skills, it is still a bit high for me. I have been on a trend downward but progress is slow. I wish I could bring my rig, but it is slightly too big to fit in my car.

Last Flame Festival on Aerial Cube

I’ve already started planning my packing.

The weather report might change by the time we get there, but it looks like the rain is happening prior to the event. Sunny and partly cloudy weather. 60s and 70s during the day, 50s at night. So mostly cool. I still always bring protection from rain just in case.

I have denim, cotton, and hemp clothing to wear for the fire circle. I have leggings and t-shirts for daywear. I am mostly sticking with black, grey, and jewel tones. I haven’t decided Since I’d like to be able to perform and practice without the Whoop band on my wrist, I also went ahead and got their bra. Looking forward to trying that out. [Get 1 month free]. I have managed to find both my gloves and arm sleeves for once so I may actually be able to get spicy with my fans.

I have went a little above and beyond when it comes to vegan food provisions. Multiple bags of Huel [Get $15 off], vegan jerky [affiliate link], bada bean bada boom snacks [affiliate link], and walking tamales [affiliate link]. Admittedly splurged a bit on convenience, I certainly won’t have to put much effort into eating my meals and cleanup…

I’m thinking that I’d like to bring my slackline, yoga mat, and percussion instruments.

I’ll be bringing the Insta360 camera [affiliate link] and hope that I can get some neat footage. I uploaded one of my first public edited videos of Bad Bitch Skate Night in my last post. I will take time to even more carefully edit the footage I get from Flame Festival.

Last year, I really enjoyed meeting the people who I befriended during the event. I hope to take a special focus on meeting people this year for collaboration and friendship.

After the festival, I hope to continue to practice whatever I’ve been working on until I have an established set. I’ll be sure to write up my experience here.
